Emma Cavadini, a young Ticino-based filmmaker and screenwriter, is the winner of the artist-in-residence programme for the project “Essere Pietra: Geodialogues with the heart of the Alps,” an interdisciplinary outreach initiative promoted by SUPSI through its Department of Environment Constructions and Design, the Institute of Earth Sciences and the Institute of Design.

In the Alps, photovoltaic modules are exposed, amongst other things, to low temperatures and heavy snow loads. A team from SUPSI, in collaboration with Austrian partners, has analysed the requirements that solar modules must meet in order to withstand these extreme conditions. To this end, the researchers have developed specific test protocols that subject modules intended for the Alpine environment to more intense stresses, allowing test times to be shortened in some cases.
